JAN PHYL VILLAGE, Fla. — The Ohio Northern softball team pounded out 23 base hits and scored 20 runs in victories over Benedictine (Ill.) and Westminster (Pa.) on day three of the team's annual spring break trip on Tuesday.
The Polar Bears (3-3 overall) began the morning with a 15-7 victory over Benedictine, then followed with a 5-1 shutout of Westminster in the afternoon.
Senior Abby Elliott (Loveland/Ursuline) started the offensive explosion in the opening game victory over the previously-undefeated Eagles (6-1) with a solo home run in the top of the second inning.
Northern would go on to score three runs in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 9-0 lead.
But BC would rally with four runs in the bottom of the fourth to get within 9-4.
The Polar Bears would answer by scoring six runs in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 15-4.
The game was called after five innings due to the NCAA's 5-run rule.
Senior Allie Bican (Solon) picked up the win to improve to 1-2 with 3.2 innings of shutout pitching.
Elliott finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI and four runs scored. Sophomore Callie Rosser (Republic/Monroeville) went 3-for-5 with two RBI and Bican was 3-for-3 with two RBI at the plate.
In the game two of the day against the Titans (3-2), ONU broke open a 1-1 tie with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Senior Annika Murray (Hilliard/Bradley) led off the frame with a double and later scored on a squeeze bunt by senior Sydney Motylinski (Ida, Mich.) to make it 2-1.
Junior Kaylie Griffin (Grafton/Elyria Catholic) followed with a single to score Elliott and it 3-1.
Motylinski and Griffin then scored on a base hit by sophomore Ashley Lenser (Brookville) to add two more insurance runs.
Lenser scattered seven hits and allowed only one earned run to grab the complete-game victory in the circle and improve to 2-1 on the year.
Elliott finished the day 4-for-7 at the plate with four RBI and five runs scored.
Ohio Northern will continue its spring break trip on Thursday morning with a 9 am game against Saint Mary's (Ind.) and a 11:30 am game with Lakeland (Wis.)
