Men's Soccer scores early, posts 3-1 victory at Wilmington

WILMINGTON — The Ohio Northern men's soccer team scored twice in the first 16 minutes and went on to a 3-1 victory at Wilmington in an Ohio Athletic Conference battle on a crisp Wednesday evening at Williams Stadium.

The Match
- Junior Will Shaffer (Galena/St. Francis DeSales) got the Polar Bears got on the scoreboard first with a goal just 2:25 into the match on an assist from junior Sam McKee (Mason).
- ONU increased its lead to 2-0 on the strength of a goal by junior Ryan Sommerfeld (Dublin/Coffman) with 15:15 gone in the contest. The goal was assisted by freshman Colin Gottron (Dayton/Centerville) and Shaffer.
- Wilmington pulled within 2-1 in the 39th minute, but it only took ONU 49 seconds to regain the two goal lead.
- The Polar Bears pushed the lead to 3-1 when senior Cade Winchester (Knoxville, Tenn./Alcoa) scored at the 39:19 mark of the first half with assists from freshmen Enzo Bordogna (Almont, Mich./Brother Rice) and Vinnie Chaput (Canton, Mich./Salem).
- Northern's defense was outstanding all night, limiting the hosts to only one shot in the contest.
- Junior Lucas Hickey (Conroe, Tex./Oak Ridge) played all 90 minutes in goal for ONU.
- The Polar Bears out-shot the Quakers 8-1 in the game and each team had two corner kicks.
Notables
- Shaffer's goal was his team-best seventh of the season, and he has a team-high 16 points. He now has 10 career goals and 27 career points.
- Sommerfeld's goal was his sixth of the season and the 11th of his career. He has 29 career points.
- Winchester's goal was his third of the season and the ninth of his career. He has 21 career points.
- Hickey is now 14-6-3 in his career in goal and has a 1.29 GAA this season.
- Wilmington leads the series between the two schools by a 19-14-2 margin, including a 10-8-0 margin at Wilmington. ONU has now won two straight matches at Williams Stadium.
- Fifth-year head coach Chris Matejka is now 51-26-14 at ONU.
