ADA — Ohio Northern put on a stellar defensive display on Saturday, defeating Otterbein 10-3 in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament on a beautiful sunny afternoon at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The fourth-seeded Polar Bears improve to 12-5 overall and will advance to the semifinals on Wednesday night at top-seeded Baldwin Wallace.
The fifth-seeded Cardinals end their season at 6-11.
The ONU defense kept OU off the scoreboard for the first 19:35 of the game as the hosts led 5-1 at halftime. Northern also forced the visitors into committing 31 turnovers in the contest.
Senior goalkeeper Cole Zaferakis (Liverpool, N.Y.) was brilliant in net, stopping nine of 12 shots on goal, and is now 12-5 on the season.
Junior Sebastian Michaud (Springboro) and sophomore Caleb Bennett (New market, Md./Linganore) each had three-goal hat tricks to lead the Ohio Northern offense.
Junior Aidan Dempsey (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College) scored with 5:10 left in the third and again with 44 seconds gone in the fourth to put ONU ahead 7-1.
Michaud added another goal 2:36 later off an assist from Dempsey to extend the lead to 8-1.
The Polar Bears out-shot the Cardinals 32-28.
Saturday's home OAC Tournament game marked the third consecutive season and the fourth time in the last five seasons that ONU has hosted a tournament contest.
Wednesday night's game will mark the fifth consecutive OAC Tournament semifinal appearance for the Polar Bears.
