ALLIANCE — The Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team opened Ohio Athletic Conference play on Saturday with an 18-7 win over Mount Union at Kehres Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 6-2 overall and 1-0 in the OAC while dropping the Purple Raiders to 3-5, 0-1.
Senior Tyler Ferguson (Springboro) led ONU with three goals, marking his third hat trick of the season.
Juniors Andrew Caliri (Lexington, Mass.), Nate Strauf (Pittsford, N.Y./Mendon), John Lynn (Cincinnati/Sycamore) and Sebastian Michaud (Springboro) added two goals each.
Lynn added two assists for a team-high four points.
Logan Gebhart led Mount Union with five points on three goals and two assists.
The Polar Bears got goals from Lynn, Michaud, junior Willy Hanson (Black Earth, Wis./Wisconsin Heights) and senior Riley O'Neal (Dumfries, Va./Forest Park) in the first quarter and took a 4-1 lead into the second period.
Hanson's goal was the start of a 13-0 scoring run for ONU capped by a goal from senior Brett Boehm (Brunswick) with 1:42 left in the third quarter.
The Polar Bears led 9-1 at halftime and 16-3 going into the fourth quarter.
Senior goalkeeper Cole Zaferakis (Liverpool, N.Y.) tallied 11 saves on 17 shots and improved to 6-2 on the season for ONU.
Northern out-shot Mount Union 49-34 and had a 55-39 edge in ground balls.
The Polar Bears return to action on Wednesday at Heidelberg at 7 p.m.
