SPRINGFIELD — The Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team is off to its best start in program history, improving to 4-0 with a 12-7 victory at Wittenberg on Saturday afternoon at Edwards-Mauer Field.
The 4-0 start is the best in the 8-year history of the program, as ONU started 3-0 in 2022, 2021, 2020 and 2018.
It also marks the sixth season in which the Polar Bears have had winning streak of four games or more.
Senior John Lynn (Cincinnati/Sycamore) and junior Andrew Caliri (Lexington, Mass.) each had a three-goal hat trick to lead the ONU offense.
Senior Cole Zaferakis (Liverpool, N.Y.) got the win in goal, improving to 4-0 on the season after saving 10 of 17 shots in the contest.
Senior Andrew Reimer (Lancaster, N.Y.) had a game-best six ground balls for ONU.
The Tigers (0-2) were led by Holton Boehmer with two goals.
Sophomore Luke Dittus (Liberty Township/St. Xavier) was 9-for-14 on faceoffs.
Leading 5-4 with 9:17 left in the first half, the Polar Bears rattled off five consecutive goals, holding WU scoreless for nearly 25 minutes, to grab a 10-4 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Wittenberg pulled within 10-7 with five minutes to play, but man-up goals by freshman Colin Willits (West Chester/Lakota West) and junior Sebastian Michaud (Springboro) just 49 seconds apart clinched the game for Northern.
ONU out-shot Wittenberg 40-26 and won 14-of-23 faceoffs while each team had 29 ground balls.
The Polar Bears reach the midpoint of their 5-game road swing on March 12 at Bridgewater (Va.)
