GREENCASTLE, Ind. — The Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 14-1 win over DePauw (Ind.) on Sunday afternoon at Reavis Stadium.
This marks the fourth straight season that the Polar Bears have started 3-0 as they dropped the Tigers to 1-1.
Northern was led on Sunday by junior Aidan Dempsey (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College), who finished with four points on two goals and two assists.
Freshman Colin Willits (West Chester/Lakota West) added three points on one goal and two assists.
Seniors Ryan McClure (Mentor) and Riley O'Neal (Dumfries, Va./Forest Park) and junior Sebastian Michaud (Springboro) scored two goals each for ONU.
The Tigers' lone goal came courtesy of Henry White.
The Polar Bears opened Sunday's game by scoring 10 unanswered goals.
O'Neal and Michaud each scored twice in the first quarter to spark ONU to a 5-0 lead going into the second period.
Northern proceeded to take a 7-0 lead into halftime thanks to second-quarter goals from Dempsey and McClure.
Dempsey and juniors Zachary Krempasky (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) and Andrew Caliri (Lexington, Mass.) scored one goal apiece to open the third quarter to put ONU up 10-0.
White got DePauw on the scoreboard with 5:08 left in the third period.
Northern ended the third quarter with goals from senior Tyler Ferguson (Springboro) and sophomore Caleb Bennett (New Market, Md./Linganore) and capped the scoring with fourth-quarter goals from McClure and senior Alex Reimer (Lancaster, N.Y.).
The Polar Bears have now outscored their opponents by a combined 45-17 through three games this season.
Sophomore Luke Dittus (Liberty Township/St. Xavier) was 8-for-10 on faceoffs and tallied a team-high five ground balls for ONU, and senior Andrew Reimer (Lancaster, N.Y.) and junior Ben Wilson (Dublin/Bishop Watterson) each had a team-best three caused turnovers to lead the Northern defense.
Senior Cole Zaferakis (Liverpool, N.Y.) got the win in goal, improving to 3-0 on the season after saving all four shots he faced in over 34 minutes of action.
ONU out-shot DePauw 44-14 and had a 38-17 advantage in ground balls.
The Polar Bears return to action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. game at Wittenberg.
