ADA — Ohio Northern outscored Adrian (Mich.) 7-2 in the second to pull away for a 15-9 men's lacrosse victory on a wet and chilly Wednesday afternoon at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Polar Bears (2-0) had three different players record hat tricks in the game.
Senior Tyler Ferguson (Springboro) and sophomore Caleb Bennett (New Market, Md./Linganore) each had four goals and senior Riley O'Neal (Dumfries, Va./Forest Park) had three goals for ONU.
The Bulldogs (0-1) were led by Michael Jones with three goals.
AC scored three consecutive goals to go ahead 5-3 midway through the second quarter.
But ONU answered with four goals an a span of 2:22, two each from O'Neal and Ferguson, to quickly regain a 7-5 advantage.
Northern led 8-7 at intermission and went on a 6-1 run over the next 21:12 to lead 14-8 with 8:48 left in the game.
Junior Chad Calderwood (West Linn, Ore./Esiscopal) was 15-for-19 in the face-off circle and had a career-high 10 ground balls for Ohio Northern.
Senior Andrew Reimer (Lancaster, N.Y.) had five ground balls and a team-best three caused turnovers and senior keeper Cole Zaferakis (Liverpool, N.Y.) had nine saves in goal to lead the Polar Bear defense.
ONU out-shot AC 57-28 and had a 46-29 advantage in ground balls.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Sunday at DePauw (Ind.) in their first road game of the season.
