ADA — Ohio Northern raced to an 8-0 halftime lead and held on for a 14-7 victory over Mount Union in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament on Tuesday night at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The fourth-seeded Polar Bears improve to 8-5 on the season and advance to the semifinals on Thursday night at top-seeded Baldwin Wallace.
The fifth-seeded Purple Raiders finish their season at 7-7.
ONU dominated the first 30 minutes of play, scoring eight consecutive goals and out-shooting MtU 32-12 to lead 8-0 at intermission.
Mount Union rallied over the next 18 minutes to pull within 9-6 with 12:28 left in the game.
Northern's only goal during that 6-1 run was a beautiful goal by senior Cameron Marous (Brecksville/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) as time expired in the third quarter that made it 9-3 and briefly halted the visitors' momentum.
But The Purple Raiders scored three times in the first 2:32 to get back into the game.
But ONU senior Pat Berthelsen-Leon (Bethpage, N.Y.) would score his third goal of the contest just 54 seconds later to make it 10-6.
Senior Joe O'Connell (Fishers, Ind.) followed with a goal at 9:55 and another man-up goal at 7:52 to give ONU a comfortable 12-6 lead.
Sophomore Cole Zaferakis (Liverpool, N.Y.) had nine saves in goal and picked up five ground balls for Northern.
The Polar Bear defense was again outstanding, forcing Mount Union into 31 turnovers in the contest.
The victory was the second OAC Tournament win for ONU in program history and was the first in Dial-Roberson Stadium. Ohio Northern will take its 2-2 tournament record into the semifinals on Thursday.
