ADA — Seniors Cameron Marous (Brecksville/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) and Pat Berthelsen-Leon (Bethpage, N.Y.) each had 4-goal hat tricks to lead the Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team to an 18-6 victory over Mount Union on Saturday afternoon at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Polar Bears finish the regular season 7-5 overall and 6-3 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Purple Raiders end their regular season at 7-6, 5-4.
Ohio Northern will now be the No. 4 seed in next week's OAC Tournament and will host a rematch with No. 5 seed Mount Union on Tuesday at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
Northern also clinched a winning season for the sixth time in the program's six years of existence.
Marous, Berthelsen-Leon and junior Cameron Veto (Fenton, Mich./Hartland) each scored three goals in a span of 57 seconds midway through the first quarter to give ONU a 3-1 lead.
Senior Joe O'Connell (Fishers, Ind.) scored again two minutes later and it was 4-1 with 5:10 left in the opening period.
After a MtU goal would make it 4-2, ONU scored the first three goals of the second quarter to extend the lead to 7-2.
Junior Nick Gosnell (Dublin/Jerome) also finished with a hat trick and got the first two of his three goals in the final 1:40 of the quarter as Northern led 10-5 at intermission.
The Purple Raiders would score 55 seconds into the third quarter to get within 10-6.
But it was all Polar Bears after that as the hosts would score the final eight goals of the game and hold MtU scoreless for the final 29:05 of the game to get the win.
Sophomore Cole Zaferakis (Liverpool, N.Y.) had 10 saves in goal for ONU.
Ohio Northern out-shot Mount Union 57-23 and won the ground ball battle 32-26.
