Football battles No. 2 Mount Union before falling 35-0

ALLIANCE — The Ohio Northern football team battled No. 2-ranked Mount Union to a scoreless draw for more than 28 minutes before eventully falling 35-0 on Saturday afternoon at Mount Union Stadium.

The Game
- Freshman Seth Borondy (Bellbrook) ran 23 times for 63 yards for the Polar Bears.
- The game was scoreless until the Purple Raiders scored with 1:22 left in the first half to go up 7-0.
- MtU then scored on four consecutive possessions in the third and fourth quarters to put the game away.
- Defensively, junior Dalton Tjong (Cumming, Ga./West Forsyth) had 13 tackles and sophomore Cooper Braden (Orange City, Fla./University) had a career-best 9 tackles for Ohio Northern.
- Seniors Josh Bever (Ashland) had three tackles and a sack.
- MtU out-gained ONU in total offense 390-131.
Notables
- Dean Paul is in his 20th season as head coach of the Polar Bears with a 118-75 career record at ONU.
- Today's game was the fourth of a string in which five of Ohio Northern's first six 2023 opponents appeared in the D3football.com preseason poll. Mount Union was ranked No. 2, John Carroll was No. 19 and Alma (Mich.) was No. 24. Baldwin Wallace (5 points) and Heidelberg (2 points) also received votes in the poll.
- Bever now has 34 career sacks in 39 career games. He ranks second all-time in ONU history. All-American and 10-year NFL veteran Jason Trusnik holds the school record with 43.0 sacks from 2002-06.
- Bever is also second in ONU history with 48 TFL in his career.
