Wieland, Robinson lead ONU to split with Heidelberg
TIFFIN — Sophomore Drew Robinson extended his hitting streak to eight games and senior pitcher Drew Wieland picked up a complete game victory as the Ohio Northern baseball team split a doubleheader with Heidelberg on Tuesday at Peaceful Valley.
Wieland threw all seven innings, giving up only one run to lead ONU to a 4-1 victory in Game 1.
Heidelberg scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to take Game 2, 11-7.
The Polar Bears moved to 12-18 overall and 4-6 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Student Princes moved to 23-6 overall and 9-3 in the OAC.
Robinson, a first baseman and pitcher, didn't start either game, but smacked a pinch-hit home run in Game 1 and cranked a double in Game 2.
In Game 1, Wieland gave up six hits and no walks, while striking out four to improve to 2-4 on the season.
In the first, sophomore Brandon Aselage doubled to right field and scored after Heidelberg pitcher Jake Gossman walked three straight batters as Northern took a 1-0 lead.
The Student Princes tied the game 1-1 in the fourth when Jason Lash and Biagio Boytim hit back-to-back two-out doubles.
In the sixth, ONU regained the lead when sophomore Brandon Hubbard singled to right field to score pinch runner Matt Rader.
Robinson's pinch-hit two-run homer run in the seventh put Northern ahead 4-1.
Gossman, the reigning OAC Pitcher of the Week, allowed four hits and gave up two earned runs to drop to 3-2.
Aselage went 3-for-4. In Game 2, the Student Princes broke a 7-7 tie with a four-run outburst in the eighth.
Andrew Buelow and Derek Andrzejczak hit RBI singles and Matt Grassley hit a pinch-hit double to score two more runs and give Heidelberg a 11-7 lead.
Steve Calevro pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to move to 3-0 on the season.
The Polar Bears jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning.
Freshman designated hitter Adam Yunker and Aselage each had two-RBI singles to put ONU ahead.
Aselage scored on a Regan Tegue ground out in the fifth to put Northern ahead 5-2, but the Berg answered with one a run in the fifth and two scored in the sixth to tie the game 5-5.
Grof and freshman Chris Sobieray each had RBI singles in the seventh to put ONU up 7-5, but Heidelberg again answered back with two scores of its own in the bottom half of the inning.
Buelow reached on an error to lead off the inning and scored when Gar Keen followed with a triple. Keen scored to tie the game at 7-7 when Lash hit a sacrifice fly.
Calvero shut down the Polar Bears over the next two innings and the Student Princes' big eighth secured the win.
Sophomore Brett Katana, in his first start of the season, went six innings and gave up eight hits and five earned runs.
Sophomore Justin Miller picked up the loss, allowing three runners on base in the pivotal eighth.
Freshman Eric Stegman, Grof and Katana all had two hits in Game 2.
Grof leads the team in batting with a .375 average, while Robinson's 2-for-2 day bumped his average up to .371.
Robinson leads ONU in hits (33), doubles (8), home runs (4) and RBI (18).
Wieland's first complete game of the year bumped his ERA down to 3.75, second-best on the team.
He leads the Bears with 58 strikeouts.
Ohio Northern returns to action this Saturday against Capital in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. in Bexley.
