ADA — The Ohio Northern women's soccer team put up a valiant effort Wednesday night against No. 11 Case Western Reserve but was unable to pull off the upset, falling 1-0 on a late-game goal at Kerscher Stadium.
The loss dropped the Polar Bears to 3-2-1 on the season while the Spartans improved to 5-0-0.
Freshman Alexa Clampitt (Sterling Heights, Mich./Utica) attempted a team-high two of ONU's five shots in the game.
The Spartans attempted 17 total shots and held a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks but were held mostly in check by a stout Polar Bear defense and senior goalkeeper Kristy Catrine (Springboro).
Catrine tallied nine saves in the game, but the Spartans' offense finally broke through when Case Western's Anika Washburn found the back of the net on assists from Aniya Hartzler and Sydney Schenk with six minutes remaining.
The Polar Bears continued to attack over the final six minutes and had a corner kick with under a minute remaining that found its way in front of the Case Western goal for a header opportunity from junior Cienna Kuhn (Elida). But goalkeeper Maggie Storti and the Spartan defense put an end to the scoring chance as time ran out.
The all-time series between the Polar Bears and Spartans is now tied at 5-5-1.
Next up for the Polar Bears is a home game against No. 17 Denison on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at 5 p.m. at Kerscher Stadium.
