Freshmen Spears, Szigeti place second to lead Wrestling at 39th Annual ONU Invitational

ADA — Freshmen Camden Spears (Plainfield, Ind.) and A.J. Szigeti (Oregon/Clay) each posted second place finishes to lead the Ohio Northern wrestling team at the 39th annual ONU Invitational on Saturday at the ONU Sports Center Fieldhouse.
The Polar Bears finished second of 13 teams with 151 points. NCAA Division II Tiffin won the team title with 200 points, Heidelberg was third with 149.5 points and Lycoming (Pa.) was fourth with 126 points.
Spears was 3-1 at 125 pounds to place second and Szigeti was 4-1 to finish second at 165 pounds in his first collegiate competition of his career.
Both men entered the tournament un-seeded.
In all, 11 Polar Bears placed in the top eight in their respective weight classes.
Five other Ohio Northern wrestlers placed third in the tournament.
Seniors Jeff Andrews (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) and Seth Transue (Plain City/Jerome), juniors Schuyler Caprella (Harrod/Allen East) and Cash Thompson (Lake Odessa, Mich./Lakewood) and freshman Chase Sumner (Ada) all had third place finishes for ONU.
Third-seeded and No. 21 ranked Andrews placed third at 141 pounds with a 4-1 record.
Top-seeded and No. 19-ranked Transue placed third at 133 with a 5-1 mark.
Caprella, who was the No. 3 seed at 157, went 5-1 and finished third.
Thompson posted a 4-1 record at 197. He entered the tournament ranked No. 15 nationally and was seeded third in his weight class.
Sumner was 5-1 at 149 pounds to finish third.
Freshmen Jacob Hamad (Sagamore Hills/Nordonia) and sixth-seeded Bailey Gibson (Elida) placed fifth at 125 pounds and 141 marks, respectively, with 4-2 marks.
Sophomore Shaun Wagner (Southington, Conn.), who was seeded sixth, tied for fifth place at 157 with a 4-2 record.
Sixth-seeded sophomore Connor Kwiat (Bloomville/Tiffin Calvert) was seventh at 174 with a 4-2 mark.
The Polar Bears will return to action next Saturday with a non-conference dual meet at Manchester (Ind.)
