ADA — Senior Jenna Dirksen (Beavercreek/Carroll) led 13 Ohio Northern players in the scoring column with 12 points as ONU defeated area-rival Defiance 90-45 on Tuesday evening at the ONU Sports Center.
The Polar Bears improve to 3-0 overall and have now won eight consecutive home openers, dating to the 2010-11 season.
Sophomore Emily Brock (Akron/Revere) added 11 points and freshman Annie Weckesser (Dayton/Chaminade-Julienne) scored 10 points for Ohio Northern.
The Yellow Jackets (0-4) were led by Sam Ervin with 14 points and six rebounds.
The Polar Bears led for all but 38 seconds of the contest after DC hit a three-pointer to go up 3-2.
ONU answered with an 19-2 run to take a 21-5 advantage with 1:33 left in the first period.
Northern led 36-16 at halftime and stretched the lead to 65-27 after three quarters.
The Polar Bears enjoyed a 38-18 advantage in points in the paint and the bench outscored the DC bench 54-7.
In all, 15 of the 16 ONU players that saw action either scored or grabbed a rebound in the game.
Ohio Northern finished the game 36-of-67 from the floor for 53.7 percent and made 11-of-23 three-pointers for 47.8 percent.
Defiance made 17-of-63 field goal attempts for 27.0 percent and was 5-of-28 from 3-point range for 17.9 percent.
ONU won the rebounding battle 45-31, led by Brock with five boards.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Saturday at 3 pm with a home game against Ohio Wesleyan.
