CLERMONT, Fla. — The Ohio Northern softball team split a pair of games Tuesday at the Spring Games played on Hancock #5. The Polar Bears handed York College (Pa.) its first loss of the season, beating the Spartans 6-5, before dropping a 2-0 decision to Misericordia (Pa.).
The results push Northern's overall record to 3-3 on the season.
In the game against York, the Polar Bears plated two runs in the top of the seventh inning — receiving RBIs from junior Abby Davis (New Palestine, Ind.) and senior Jordan Cloonan (Kirtland/Cornerstone Christian) — which game them some soon-needed breathing room. York's Taylor Coon hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh to knock Northern starter sophomore Stacey Walters (Sunbury/Big Walnut) from the game. Sophomore Kaitlyn Hagarty (Akron/Revere) logged the final out for the save.
Walters went 6.2 innings, surrendering five earned runs on nine hits with on strikeout. The win improved her to 2-1.
Senior Brady Guest (Convoy/Crestview) provided a lot of pop at the plate. She registered three hits, one homer, and knocked home a pair of runs.
Guest hit her two-run home run in the top of the first to give ONU the early advantage. The Polar Bears enjoyed a two-run fourth with RBIs from sophomore Hannah Rubel (Swanton/Notre Dame) and sophomore Marissa Cilluffo (Macomb, Mich./Eisenhower).
Northern only managed two hits in the game against the Cougars. Misericordia tallied both of its runs in the first inning, and that was more than enough.
ONU continues play at the Spring Games Thursday afternoon against Concordia-Moorhead (Minn.) at 3 p.m.
