ADA — The Ohio Northern softball team celebrated senior day as they split with Mt. St. Joseph 8-6, 5-6 Sunday afternoon at the ONU Softball Field.
The Polar Bears move to 18-14 overall, while the Lions move to 14-7-1.
Northern recognized seniors Amanda Lahti and Tessa Topp and their many contributions to the ONU softball program.
Freshman Kylie Asmus led ONU on the day going 3-for-4 with four RBIs in the game one victory.
In game one, the Polar Bears scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning as Asmus singled to left scoring junior Megan Hupp and advancing sophomore Jenna Hollar to scoring position.
Hollar would later score following a miscue from the Lions catcher that plated ONU's second run of the contest.
MSJ would plate a run of its own in the top of the third inning.
In the bottom half of the inning, the Polar Bears scored two more runs as Asmus recorded her second RBI of the day scoring Hollar.
Sophomore Miranda Huddle picked up her first RBI of the contest as she singled to right scoring Asmus.
Leading 4-2 in the fourth inning, ONU added some insurance runs as sophomore Anna Martin, Hupp and Hollar all reached home.
Asmus would record her fourth RBI of the contest in the bottom of the fifth inning as she drove in ONU's final run of the contest.
Sophomore Kirsten Lightel got the win in the circle for Northern, improving to 10-4 on the season.
The Polar Bears fell behind early in game two as the Lions scored the games first run in the top of the first inning.
Northern would tie the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning as Lahti doubled to right center scoring Hollar.
Mt. St. Joseph would plate two runs in the fourth inning, two more in the fifth inning and one in the seventh inning to take the 6-3 lead.
Topp would lead an ONU seventh inning rally as the senior hit a solo home run to center field.
The Polar Bears would go on to load the base paths before the Lions defense was able to retire the side.
Northern recorded a game-high 11 hits in the contest.
ONU returns to action Wednesday as they travel to Berea to play Baldwin Wallace.
