ADA — Senior Lucas Shumate (Wapakonet /Spencerville) and sophomore Ian McVey (Stow/Stow-Munroe Falls) both set school records to lead the men's indoor track and field team at the Grand Valley State (Mich.) Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears move to 13-10 on the season after finishing 10th of 20 teams at the meet.
Shumate won the weight throw with a toss of 59' 5.00" and broke his own previous school record that he set in 2015.
Shumate's mark in the weight throw currently ranks second in the nation.
McVey broke the school record in the 3,000-meter run, finishing fifth overall in 8:26.03.
Junior Matt Molinaro (Sterling Heights, Mich./DeLaSalle) finished third in the 800-meter dash in a career-fastest time of 1:52.49.
Molinaro owns the fastest time nationally by nearly two seconds in the 800-meter run.
In the 5,000-meter run, senior Cully Gordon (Holmesville/West Holmes) finished fifth in 15:20.13.
"We set a lot of great marks today," said head coach Jason Maus. "This was a huge step up from our season-opener last week and we saw a lot of improvement. We had a great day both on the track and in the field."
Northern will return to action Saturday as it hosts the annual Joe Banks Invitational at the ONU Sports Center with field events beginning at 11 am.
