WILMINGTON — The No. 19-ranked Ohio Northern men's soccer team's 10-game winning streak came to an end Wednesday evening as the Polar Bears were topped 2-1 by Wilmington at Williams Stadium.
ONU (11-3-2 overall, 3-1-0 Ohio Athletic Conference) got a 73rd minute equalizer by sophomore Levi King (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central).
King has a team-leading eight goals on the season.
Bruce Anthony scored an 89th-minute game-winner for WC (10-2-2 overall, 3-0-1 OAC).
Northern pressured the Quakers throughout the match, outshooting WC 16-6.
The Quakers struck first in the 65th-minute on an unassisted goal.
In the 73rd-minute, King netted a long-range header off a cross by junior Mitch Colvin (Tipp City/Tippecanoe), tying the match at 1-1.
King's header came from 16 yards out and was sent into the bottom right corner past WC keeper Felix Maurer.
Sophomore Seth Gundlach (Wilmington) blocked the initial game-winning attempt in the box during the 89th minute.
Colvin nearly blocked the rebound attempt, but it was ruled that the ball had fully crossed the goal line, resulting in a 2-1 Wilmington scoreline.
In addition to seven shots from King, senior Noah Bachwitz (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville North) and junior Beelal Hasan (Worthington) each generated two shot attempts.
WC edged ONU 6-5 in corner kicks.
The Polar Bears return to pitch Saturday, hosting No. 13-ranked John Carroll (according to D3Soccer.com) at 7 p.m. in battle of ranked teams.
