ADA — Senior Ben Gawronski (Dublin/Scioto) and sophomore Sebastian Michaud (Springboro) each recorded hat tricks to lead the Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team to an 11-2 victory over Mount Union to open Ohio Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
With the win, the Polar Bears improve to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the OAC while the Purple Raiders fall to 3-3, 0-1.
Michaud added a pair of assists to his three goals in the game, giving him a team-high five points, and Gawronski finished with three goals.
Freshman Nate Jablonski (Cary, Ill./Cary Grove) scored two goals, sophomore Aidan Dempsey (Silver Spring, Md./St. John's College) had one goal and one assist, and junior Alex Reimer (Lancaster, N.Y.) and sophomore John Lynn (Cincinnati/Sycamore) added one goal apiece for ONU.
Eli Ciotti and Alek Kungle scored one goal each to lead Mount Union.
Jablonski scored both of his goals in the first quarter to spark the Polar Bears to a 4-0 lead going into the second period.
Mount Union got on the scoreboard courtesy of Ciotti with 11:23 left in the second quarter, but Dempsey answered with a goal with 5:20 remaining that sent ONU into halftime up 5-1.
Lynn scored his team-leading 11th goal of the season in a man-up situation early in the third quarter, and the Polar Bears went on to outscore the Purple Raiders 4-0 in the period to take a 9-1 lead into the fourth.
Two fourth-quarter goals from Gawronski put ONU up 11-1 before Kungle closed the scoring with a goal with 7:15 remaining.
Junior Cole Zaferakis (Liverpool, N.Y.) made seven saves in goal for ONU and improved his record to 5-2 on the season.
The Polar Bears out-shot Mount Union 54-23 in the game and finished with a 38-20 edge in ground balls.
Northern returns to action on Wednesday when they host OAC foe Wilmington at 7 p.m.
