DANVILLE, Ky. — The Ohio Northern men's lacrosse team edged Centre (Ky.) 10-9 Wednesday night. Senior Kevin Giles (Williamsburg, Va./Warhill) netted an unassisted go-ahead goal with 1:23 to push the Polar Bears record to 4-1 on the season.
Giles' late-game heroics accounted for just a fraction of his scores, as he led Northern with three goals. Patrick Moran added a pair of scores, while seniors Samuel Neff (Gainesville, Va./Trinity Christian), Pat Berthelsen-Leon (Bethpage, N.Y.) and Cameron Marous (Brecksville) and juniors Joe O'Connell (Fishers, Ind.) and Mason Schmeling (Columbus/Hilliard Darby) all tallied one score apiece.
ONU freshman goalie Cole Zaferakis (Liverpool, N.Y.) registered nine saves on 18 shots. The Polar Bears boasted 37 shots in all, 26 of which were on target, while Centre had 27 shots, 18 of which were on frame.
Northern jumped out to the early 5-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Despite being doubled up in the second frame, ONU still held a 7-5 edge at halftime before laying claim to to an 8-7 lead ahead of the game's final period.
The Polar Bears travel to Nazareth (N.Y.) Saturday for a 2 p.m. contest.
