Saturday's Contest: Saturday's game is the third consecutive road game for ONU to open its 2016 season and is the first home game of the year for Otterbein. Dating to 2015, Saturday's game will be the fifth consecutive road tilt for the Polar Bears after playing playoff games at Franklin (Ind.) and Wisconsin-Oshkosh last season.
ONU Head Coach Dean Paul: Paul in his 13th season at ONU with an 84-42 record. He is 123-54 in 17 seasons overall and is 9-3 against OU.
HU head coach Tim Doup: Doup is in his sixth season at OU with a 23-19 record. He is 1-4 against ONU.
Last Year's Meeting: RB Justin Magazine tied a school record with 6 rushing TDs and WR Devon Price became ONU's all-time career receiving yardage leader as Ohio Northern defeated Otterbein 42-10 on Senior Day in Ada. Magazine led the Polar Bears with 204 yards rushing on 25 carries and six touchdowns, tying the record six rushing touchdowns by ONU Hall of Famer, All-American and NFL alumnus Jamal Robertson, set against Marietta in 2000. Price finished the contest with 113 receiving yards on eight receptions, becoming the ONU career leader in receiving yards with 3,051, passing former ONU All-American Steve Vagedes, who had 3,036 receiving yards from 1995-99. The ONU defense was led by S Justin Tello with 12 tackles and DE Scott Rapps with five tackles, three sacks and 4.0 tackles for loss. Magazine was the key for Northern in the first half as the senior rushed for four touchdowns and 152 yards as the Polar Bears built a 28-0 lead at intermission. Ohio Northern out-gained Otterbein 462-212 in total offense.
ONU Last Week: Ohio Northern opened the OAC portion of its schedule with a 45-14 loss at Heidelberg on Sat.The contest was the sixth in the Bendekovic Bowl series. Freshman RB Christiaan Williams led the Ohio Northern offense with 123 yards rushing, 63 yards receiving and 186 all-purpose yards. Sophomore Will Freed completed 17-of-37 passes for 170 yards and sophomore WR Chad Rex ran for a score and caught a TD pass for ONU. Defensively, senior S Dan Eller had a team-high 11 tackles for Northern. HU scored with 35 seconds left in the half, then got 10 points in the first three minutes of nthe third period to take a 32-0 lead. HU out-gained ONU 477-322 in total offense.
ONU Leaders: The ONU running game is led by freshman RB Christiaan Williams (43 att, 298 yards, 1 TD) and freshman RB David Haseleu (6 att, 47 yards). Sophomore QB Will Freed has completed 38 of 78 passes for 451 yards and 2 TDs. Sophomore WR Chad Rex (12 rec., 101 yards, 1 TD) and senior WR Reed Allen (7 rec, 92 yards) led the ONU receivers. Junior LB Zach Schmerge, senior S Dan Eller and senior DT Scott Rapps lead the defense with 18, 17 and 14 tackles, respectively. Rapps leads the team with 1.5 sacks.
OU Last Week: Otterbein built a 35-0 lead at intermission and never looked back to win its OAC opener for a fifth-straight season, defeating Wilmington 52-7. Otterbein finished with a 526-214 advantage in total yards, getting 4 touchdowns from QB Logan Stepp and limiting the hosts to just eight yards rushing. RB Justin Stoner just missed the 100-yard mark on the ground with 15 carries for 99 yards, while QB Steve Irwin (92) and RB Shaq Alexander (86) also flirted with the century mark.
OU Leaders: The OU running game is led this season by QB Logan Stepp (23 att., 139 yards, 3 TDs) and RB Justin Stoner (15 att, 99 yards, 1 TD). QB Logan Stepp is 28 of 48 passing for 361 yards and 4 TDs. WR Hunter Joseph (11 rec., 202 yards, 2 TDs) and WR Julian Lowe (11 rec., 101 yards, 1 TD) led the OU receivers. LB Steven Carpenter, DE Kyle Blust , LB Joe Batey and LB Nick Toledo led the OU defense with 12, 9, 9 and 9 tackles, respectively. Blust leads OU with 3.0 sacks.
