Women's Cross Country defeats three NCAA Division I schools, finishes second at U. of Virginia Open

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The No. 33-ranked Ohio Northern women's cross country team defeated three NCAA Division I schools to finish second of six teams Friday night at the University of Virginia Open.
The Polar Bears (5-3 overall) finished finished with 58 points. Virginia won the meet with 15 points, Radford was third with 98, Virginia Commonwealth was fourth with 105, Lynchburg (Va.) was fifth with 117 and Norfolk State was sixth with 167..
All-American Alison Steinbrunner led ONU with a 10th place finish in 19:23 for 5,000 meters. Ashley Baumer was 14th in 20:24, Mallory Bloom was 15th in 20:25 and Lydia Weaver was 16th in 20:26.
"We ran very well today," ONU head coach Jason Maus said. "This was an outstanding showing against mostly Division I competition. We had a nice group of alumni and former ONU runners here to cheer us on, so it turned out to be a great day."
Virginia's Anna Corrigan won individual honors in 18:04.
The Polar Bear JV squad win run on Saturday at IP-Fort Wayne and the entire squad will compete again Sept. 16 at the Calvin (Mich.) Select Meet.
