Bio

Katie (Weininger) Kuhn served as head coach of the Ohio Northern volleyball program for three seasons from 2020-22.

In her first season at the helm in 2020, she guided ONU to a 13-3 record, a No. 19 national ranking and a third-place finish in the OAC.

She followed that up by leading the Polar Bears to a 22-6 overall record, OAC regular-season and tournament championships and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2021. The team was ranked as high as No. 8 in the AVCA national poll during the season and finished the year at No. 20.

Her team's performance earned her the OAC Coach of the Year and AVCA Region 7 Coach of the Year honors.

Additionally, Melina Woods and Taylor Baxter were AVCA All-America Honorable Mention selections — and Baxter was the OAC Freshman of the Year — in 2021.

She had record of 51-19 for a winning percentage of .729, which includes a 27-7 (.794) mark in the OAC.

Kuhn served nine seasons as an assistant coach for the Polar Bear volleyball team. She was also an adjunct professor in the Communication Arts department during that time.

As an assistant coach, Kuhn focused on the setters, where she coached All-American Ashley Borchers.

Kuhn is no stranger to the ONU volleyball program, as she was a four-year letterwinner and three-year team captain as a student-athlete from 2005 to 2008.

For her efforts on the sidelines, Kuhn was named one of the nation's top 30 volleyball coaches under 30 years of age in 2016 by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

The AVCA's Thirty Under 30 award was created in 2009 to honor up-and-coming coaching talent at all levels of the sport.

She is only the third head coach in the 61-year history of the program, replacing 29-year head coach Kate Witte, who retired at the end of the 2019 season.

The two-time All-American finished her career third all-time in assists at 4,680. She was also the 2008 OAC Co-Player of the Year, the same season the Polar Bears reached the NCAA Final Four.

In spring 2011, Kuhn completed a graduate assistantship at Ashland University where she earned her master’s degree in education. As a volleyball assistant for the Eagles, she focused primarily in the area of setting while also tending to game management and operations.

She graduated from Ohio Northern in 2009 with a dual degree in public relations and sport management.

Kuhn married fellow ONU alum and All-OAC swimmer Brett Kuhn in May 2011. The couple resides in Upper Sandusky with their two children, Soucie and Gier.
