ADA — The No. 13 Ohio Northern volleyball made a statement in the Ohio Athletic Conference on Wednesday, sweeping defending OAC Tournament champion Muskingum 25-9, 25-19, 25-12 at the ONU Sports Center.
The Polar Bears improve to 13-1 overall and are 2-0 in OAC play, while the Muskies fall to 9-7, 1-1.
Northern's offensive was impressive all night, hitting .429 with 46 kills and only seven errors on 91 attempts.
Freshman Taylor Baxter (Bellevue) and sophomore Sydney Eggleton (Southfield, Mich./Farmington) led ONU with hitting percentage of .647 and .643, respectively.
Baxter had 11 kills on 17 attempts with five service aces and Eggleton had 10 kills on 14 attempts with one error.
ONU hit .538 in the opening set (17-3-26) and used a 12-2 run to grab a commanding 16-5 lead.
MU took its only lead of the night in Set 2, and led 17-15 after an ONU service error.
But the Polar Bears ended the set on a 10-2 tear and won the set handily.
Northern then scored the first four points of set three and used a 7-0 run to grab an 18-8 advantage. ONU his .533 in the third set with 16 kills on 30 attacks.
Freshman Emma Strozewski (Lakeville, Minn./North) added nine kills for ONU.
Muskingum hit .090 with 23 kills and 16 errors on 78 attempts and was led by Brooke Bigrigg with seven kills.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Saturday with an OAC match at Marietta.
