ADA — The American Volleyball Coaches Association announced its recipient list for the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2018-19 season. Ohio Northern was one of the teams that earned the special recognition.
The Team Academic Award is awarded to volleyball squads at the high school and collegiate levels that possess a cumulative GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale or a 4.1 on a 5.0 scale. A record total of 1,126 teams earned the award last season, which breaks the previous year's record of 977.
ONU has now won the award 17 times in program history and 2018 marks its 11th consecutive season winning the award.
The Polar Bears enjoyed a high level of success on the court last season, as well. Northern boasted a 22-8 overall record and an 8-1 mark in the OAC.
ONU breezed through the OAC tournament, only losing two sets, en route to a conference tournament championship. The Polar Bears' season came to an end in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
Northern opens the 2019-20 season at the ONU Invitational. The Polar Bears battle Illinois Wesleyan and Calvin (Mich.) Aug. 30.
