ADA — For the second consecutive season, junior middle hitter Chelsea Huppert (Bremen, Ind.) has been tabbed to the Google Cloud Academic All-District First-Team in women's volleyball by the College Sports Information Directors of America for her success in the classroom and on the court in 2018, the national office announced Thursday afternoon.
To be considered, student-athletes must be a sophomore or higher in academic standing, serve as a starter or important reserve player for their respective team, and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a 4.0 grade scale at her current institution. In addition, all nominees must have participated in 50 percent of the team's competitions at their respective position.
Sports information directors at member institutions within the region then vote on nominees based upon their on-field success and their academic achievements.
Huppert, a junior pharmacy major, adds the accolade to an already impressive awards list in her career that includes being named AVCA All-America Honorable Mention in 2017 and 2018, AVCA First-Team All-Great Lakes Region twice, and to the All-Ohio Athletic Conference listings all three years.
This season, she lead the Polar Bears with 368 kills, a .340 hitting percentage, and 70 total blocks while her kills and attack percentage marks also ranked her third among OAC student-athletes. Her hitting percentage also ranks third all-time in the junior class record book at Ohio Northern.
The Bremen, Indiana native owns 1,025 career kills, a .338 hitting clip, and 286 career blocks in her three years as a Polar Bear. Her career hitting percentage now ranks third all-time in program history.
As a First-Team Academic All-District honoree, Huppert will advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot, which is set to be released on Wednesday, December 12.
Ohio Northern concluded the 2018 campaign with a 22-8 overall record and an 8-1 OAC mark, which provided them a share of their third straight OAC Regular Season title. The Polar Bears would go on to win their league-best 20th OAC Tournament title after knocking off Marietta, Baldwin Wallace, and Muskingum to capture the crown.
ONU would wrap up the campaign with a trip to the NCAA Division III Tournament where they fell in their opening-round matchup to No. 18-ranked UW-Whitewater.
