Volleyball uses balanced attack to defeat Defiance 25-17, 25-16, 25-19 for seventh consecutve victory

ADA — Five different players had five or more kills as the Ohio Northern volleyball team swept area-rival Defiance 25-17, 25-16, 25-19 Tuesday evening at the ONU Sports Center.
The Polar Bears run their win streak to seven matches and wrap up the non-conference portion of their schedule with a 15-3 record, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 3-9.
Freshman Chelsea Huppert (Bremen, Ind.) led ONU with eight kills and four blocks.
Senior Ashley Borchers (Russia) had seven kills and 27 assists, freshman McKenna Jordan (Toledo/St. Ursula) had seven kills and senior Claire Heitkamp (Maria Stein/Marion Local) had seven kills for Ohio Northern.
The Polar Bears were in control of the match from the onset and hit .271 as a team, while holding Defiance to just a .037 hitting percentage.
In the first set, Northern hit a sparkling .419 with 15 kills.
Ohio Northern went on a 5-0 run to go on top 5-1 early.
DC pulled within 16-14, but a 5-1 ONU run extended the lead to 21-15 and Northern went on to the 25-17 win.
In Set 2, Northern led 14-13 when a kill by Jordan sparked an 11-3 run to end the set.
Set three was much of the same as a 5-1 Polar Bear run turned a tight 8-6 score into a 13-7 advantage.
Northern extended its lead to 21-13 and closed out the match at 25-19.
Defiance was led by Marissa Windau with a match-high 9 kills.
The Polar Bears will open the Ohio Athletic Conference portion of their schedule on Saturday with a 1 pm match at Mount Union.
