Volleyball wins 37th annual ONU Invitational with sweep of DePauw (Ind.)

ADA — The Ohio Northern volleyball team won the 37th annual ONU Invitational with a 25-16, 25-18, 25-20 sweep of DePauw (Ind.) Friday night at the ONU Sports Center.
Both teams move to 1-1 on the season.
Sophomore middle hitter Haley Potters had a match-high 12 kills and hit .455 to lead the Polar Bears.
Senior middle hitter Kaitlann Hogrefe added nine kills and a match-high five blocks, junior setter Ashley Borchers dished out 35 assists and sophomore libero had a team-best 25 digs for ONU.
Northern was in control from the outset and cruised to victories in the first two sets.
In the opening set, ONU rattled off five consecutive points to take quick 8-3 lead. The Tigers would pull within 11-9, but three straight ONU points would extend the lead to 14-9.
Leading 21-16, ONU would score the final four points of the match to win the opening set 25-16.
In set two, the Polar Bears went on a 9-1 run to turn a slim 12-11 lead into a commanding 20-12 lead.
DePauw took a 14-11 lead in set three, but ONU went on an 8-3 run to take a 19-17 advantage.
Northern scored the final three points on a kill by Potters, an error by DePauw and a kill by junior Kristin Sessler.
The Polar Bears hit .221 for the match with 42 kills, while the Tigers hit .077 with 32 kills.
The match was also part of the Bluffton Spiketacular, which is being held at Bluffton's Sommer Center.
The Polar Bears will face Alma (Mich.) and Augustana (Ill.) on Saturday at Bluffton at Noon and 2 pm, respectively.
