HANOVER, Ind. -- The Ohio Northern volleyball team posted a pair of 3-0 sweeps over Anderson (Ind.) and Hanover (Ind.) on Day 1 of the Hanover Invitational Friday night at Collier Arena.
The Polar Bears improve to 6-1 on the season and are tied for first place with Bethany (W.Va.) with 2-0 records after the first day of the two-day tournament.
Northern opened the tournament with a 25-17, 25-22, 25-9 victory over Anderson (Ind.)
Freshman Ellie Gillespie had a team-high 10 kills, junior Julia Fuerst had eight kills, senior Ellen Grenert had eight kills and senior Kelsie Zumberger had eight kills and 35 assists for ONU.
Junior Jeni Kmic had a match-high 23 digs, Gillespie had 16 digs and Fuerst had a team-high four blocks for ONU.
Northern hit .315 as a team for the match on 48 kills and only eight errors, while the Ravens (3-3) hit .100 on 24 kills and 12 errors.
Northern wrapped up the first day with an impressive 25-14, 25-22, 25-16 victory over tournament host Hanover.
Junior Kristin Davidson led ONU with nine kills, Fuerst had eight kills and Grenert had eight kills for ONU.
Zumberger dished out 33 assists and Kmic had a team-high 20 digs for the Polar Bears.
Northern hit .264 on 38 kills and just 10 errors, while the Panthers (3-3) hit .144 with 37 kills and 22 errors.
Northern will wrap up the tournament on Saturday with a 10 am match against Bethany and a Noon match against Spalding (Ky.)
