ADA — The 18th-ranked Ohio Northern women's soccer team got its second win of the season Friday evening, shutting out Mt. St. Joseph 1-0 at Kerscher Stadium.
The Polar Bears (2-1-1 overall) scored early in the first half with freshman Jess Gast (Perrysburg) finding the back of the net on an assist from sophomore Jill Roberts (Bellbrook/Carroll).
The goal marked Gast's first of her collegiate career, and Roberts collected her second assist of the year, giving her a team-high six points in 2021.
The loss dropped Mt. St. Joseph to 1-3-0 on the season.
The Polar Bears didn't waste much time getting on the scoreboard, as Gast's goal came just 5:29 into the game.
ONU continued to find shot opportunities in the opening half and closed the first 45 minutes having out-shot the Lions by an 8-0 margin.
The Polar Bears had more scoring chances throughout the second half but were unable to convert on any of them to build their lead, as MSJ goalkeeper Madison Hart played well in defeat, making 10 saves.
ONU out-shot MSJ 7-4 in the second half and had 11 shots on goal in the game but needed to rely on its defense to make the one-goal lead hold up.
The defense, back-ended by senior goalkeeper Kristy Catrine (Springboro) who made a pair of saves in the shutout, did its job effectively to secure the victory.
ONU out-shot MSJ 15-4 in the game and held a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Polar Bears have a quick turnaround for their next game, as they return to Kerscher Stadium on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. to host Grove City (Pa.).
