ADA — Junior Kristy Catrine (Springboro) made three saves in regulation and three more in the two overtime periods.
But it was her three saves in the 12-round shootout that made the difference as Ohio Northern advanced past Capital 9-8 on penalty kicks in the semifinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament on a chilly Thursday night at Kerscher Stadium.
The game officially goes into the record books as a 0-0 tie with ONU advancing 9-8 on PKs.
The second-seeded Polar Bears (8-0-2 overall) advance to the OAC Tournament Finals on Sunday at 2 pm at top-seeded Otterbein.
Third-seeded Capital ends its season at 7-2-1.
Otterbein advanced to the finals by defeating fourth-seeded Wilmington 5-1 in the other semifinal match on Thursday.
Sophomore Lauren Naso (Grosse Isle, Mich.) scored twice in the shootout round and notched the eventual match-winning goal in the 12th round.
ONU led 4-2 but CU tied the shootout with a goal in the bottom of the fourth, an ONU miss in the top of the fifth round and a goal in the bottom of the fifth round, sending the shootout into extra rounds.
The teams traded makes in the sixth, seventh, ninth and tenth rounds and had misses in the eighth and 11th rounds.
Catrine had a save in the third round and a second save in the 11th round.
Naso scored in the top of the 12th round and Catrine stopped CU's attempt in the bottom of the 12th to send ONU into the finals.
Catrine extended her school record scoreless streak to 926 minutes and has not allowed a goal in 10 matches this season.
