ADA — The Ohio Northern women's soccer team scored three goals in the first 28 minutes to cruise to a 3-1 win against Calvin (Mich.) on Saturday afternoon at Kerscher Stadium.
Junior Jenna Fuller (Countryside, Ill./Lyons Township) scored unassisted goals in the 5th and 20th minutes to lead the Polar Bears (3-1-2).
"[Fuller] is opportunistic," 16th-year head coach Mark Batman said. "That's what you want out of a good goal-scorer."
Junior Emma Barney (Oak Harbor) added a goal in the 28th miunte.
The Knights (0-5-1) scored on a penalty kick in the 33rd minute.
In the 5th minute, junior Sydney Leshnak (Liberty Township/Mount Notre Dame) sent a deep ball down the left side that was flicked on by senior Rose Nienaber (Cincinnati/Oak Hills). Fuller ran onto the ball, made a move on a CC defender, and slipped a shot past the keeper to put ONU up 1-0.
Fuller added a second goal in 20th minute, chasing down an errant Knights pass. Fuller beat the CC keeper to the ball, sliding to get a touch to sent it just inside the left post, extending ONU's lead to 2-0.
Barney scored in the 28th minute off a low cross from senior Haley Moses (Mason). Barney gathered and fired a shot that was deflected by a Knights defender into the back of the net.
Four minutes later, CC responded with a goal off a penalty kick to draw within 3-1.
The Polar Bears nearly added to their lead on a strike by Nienaber in the 53rd minute, but the Knights keeper leaped to make the save.
Northern's defense held CC to six shots, with two on-frame. ONU created 11 shots, producing six on-target attempts.
ONU held a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Ohio Northern returns to action on Tuesday, hosting Oberlin at 7 p.m.
