BLOOMINGTON, Ill. — The No. 8-ranked Ohio Northern women's soccer team dropped their season-opening contest 1-0 in overtime against Hope (Mich.) at the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
Northern falls to 0-1-0 overall, while the Flying Dutch improve to 2-0-0.
The ONU defense held strong during the contest, but the Flying Dutch were able to net the game-winner with less than a minute to go in the first overtime period.
Senior McKenna Welsh (Westerville/Bishop Harley) made her long-awaited return following two seasons on the sideline and had two shots to lead the Polar Bear offense.
Senior Sarah Puntel (Strongsville) and sophomore Megan Breier (Plainfield, Ill./North) also recorded a shot each.
Junior goalkeeper Meagan Grierson (Miamisburg) made three saves in the goal for Northern.
ONU posted five corner kicks to Hope's two, while the Flying Dutch outshot the Polar Bears by an 8-4 margin.
Northern will return to the pitch on Sunday at No. 23-ranked Illinois Wesleyan at 3:00 p.m. (2 p.m. CST).
