ADA — The Ohio Northern women's soccer team used a strong defensive performance to propel itself to a 1-0 victory over DePauw (Ind.) on Friday evening at Kerscher Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 2-1-0 overall with the victory, while the Tigers fall to 0-2-0.
Senior forward Anna Niemeyer (Loveland) led the way for Northern offensively, scoring the lone goal of the evening for ONU.
Northern wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as Niemeyer played a deflected ball from junior Sarah Puntel (Strongsville) and found the back of the net through traffic to give ONU an early 1-0 lead in the 12th minute.
The Polar Bear defense would hold strong as ONU went into the intermission leading 1-0.
Northern would threaten on numerous occasions in the second half, outshooting the Tigers 13-0 in the second period.
Sophomore goalkeeper Meagan Grierson (Miamisburg) earned the victory in the goal for ONU and posted her first shutout of the season in the victory.
The ONU defense was able to stifle the DePauw offense, outshooting DU 25-0 in the contest.
Northern also owned a 9-2 advantage in the corner kick battle.
The Polar Bears return to action tomorrow evening in game two of its 3-game home stand, and hosts Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) at Kerscher Stadium at 6 pm.
