Women's Soccer to host Red Card Cancer Game
The Ohio Northern University women's soccer team will host the Red Card Cancer Game during its 7:00 PM match on Wednesday October 29th at Kerscher Stadium. The Polar Bears join forces with the Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets for the common cause of raising awareness and funds for cancer research.
The Red Card Cancer was initiated in the Fall of 2009 at Bloomsburg University by Men's Head Soccer Coach, Paul Payne. Payne began the program as a tribute to longtime friend and mentor, Women's Head Coach at Scranton University, Joe Bochicchio. When Bochicchio passed away after losing his battle with melanoma, Payne began the campaign to raise awareness about cancer in the soccer community and raise funds for research.
That year 17 programs reached out and wanted to become a part of the effort and the first Red Card Cancer event raised over $5,000. In 2009, Bochicchio's fellow NSCAA Board member Charlotte Morgan passed away from pancreatic cancer proving that lots of people involved in the game of soccer have been affected, in one way or another, by cancer.
Red Card Cancer has since garnered attention from LiveSTRONG, the US Soccer Federation and in 2010 Red Card Cancer partnered up with The Sidney Kimmel Cancer Research Center at Johns Hopkins Medicine and D.C. United of the MLS to help carry the message.
The Polar Bears of ONU are joining forces with the Yellow Jackets of Baldwin Wallace for a common cause in hopes of using the growing game of soccer to continue this awareness of cancer and raise funds for cancer research. Two separate tables will be available during the event where family, friends and supporters of each team can buy t-shirts and donate money in exchange for a Red Card Cancer wristband to support this great cause. The team who raises the most money by the end of the match will receive the Red Card Cancer trophy and hold onto it until next year's contest.
We invite you to join us for a competitive night of soccer centered on one common ground, the fight against Cancer!!! For more information on the Red Card Cancer organization and ways you can get involved, visit www.redcardcancer.org.
