ADA — The Ohio Northern women's soccer team evened the all-time series against Thomas More (Ky.) with a 2-1 win at ONU Soccer Field in a non-conference bout Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Northern moves to 4-1-1 overall and evens the series at 2-all; the Saints drop to 2-2 overall.
Northern took the advantage in the 31st minute, when freshman Kristina Klusek dribbled deep into Thomas More territory. She then crossed the ball to the middle to a cutting Abbie Schauble who knocked the ball in for the goal.
It was a first for both players, as it was Schauble's first goal and Klusek's first assist of the season.
The Saints came out of halftime attacking the Northern defense, taking three shots early in the second half. However the Northern defense and wide shots kept Thomas More from putting one up.
ONU extended its lead to 2-0 in the 73rd minute with a Sami Atkinson goal. She took a pass from senior Kim McGowan and knocked it past a charging keeper into an open goal.
The Saints finally got one on the board in the final minute with a goal by Courtney Clark, who headed a pass from Kendra Wessling.
"It was a great result after a long week. We had four really tough games in a row and so fatigue was setting in," head coach Mark Batman said. "But our girls persevered and got the win. These kinds of games will help us just get better."
Northern had a narrow advantage in shot attempts, taking aim 12 times to Thomas More's 10. Waehner made four saves and tallies the win while Katie Burger had two saves.
The Polar Bears host game two of a four-game homestand Tuesday with a game against Denison. The contest is slated for a 4 p.m. start.
