ADA — Senior grappler Clayton Davidson (Kirtland) has been named the Ohio Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
On January 11 and 12, the Kirtland native compiled a 4-1 overall record at the 31st annual Lycoming (Pa.) Budd Whitehill National Duals in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Davidson would record a pin, a major decision, and two wins via decision in the 174- and 184-pound weight classes over the two-day tournament event.
With his first victory on Friday afternoon over Ashton Gyenizs from Wilkes (Pa.), he would become just the 13th wrestler in program history to record 100 career victories at Ohio Northern. His career record now stands at 103-45 overall, a .696 win percentage, to rank 11th on the all-time wins list.
The weekend efforts move Davidson to 18-5 on the season with five pins and four major decision victories to his credit. He currently ranks tied for first on the team in pins, second in total wins, and tied for second in major decisions.
The senior earns his second career OAC Wrestler of the Week honor and his first mention during the 2018-19 season with the selection.
Northern would finish the Budd Whitehill National Duals with a 1-4 record to end 15th in the 16-team field. The Polar Bears would fall to No. 21-ranked Washington & Lee (Va.), Wilkes (Pa.), Springfield (Mass.), and Castleton (Vt.) before defeating Southern Virginia for the second time this season with a 26-22 triumph on Saturday.
Ohio Northern will conclude its 2018-19 home slate on Tuesday evening with an Ohio Athletic Conference dual against Muskingum at 7 p.m. inside the ONU Sports Center. The event will also serve as the program's senior night, honoring Davidson and his fellow graduating teammates.
