Wrestling posts 26-15 OAC victory at John Carroll

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — The Ohio Northern wrestling team posted a solid 26-15 victory at John Carroll on Tuesday evening at the DeCarlo Center.
The Polar Bears (7-9 overall, 1-2 Ohio Athletic Conference) won seven of the 10 weight classes to notch their first OAC victory of the season.
The Blue Streaks fall to 5-5, 0-3.
Freshman Avory Winans (Wooster) got the match started on a good note for Ohio Northern with an 8-4 decision at 125 pounds.
Senior Brad Taton (Mentor/Lake Catholic) made it 6-0 Polar Bears with a 9-3 decision at 133.
After back-to-back JCU wins, senior Gavin Nelson (Oregon/Clay) posted a 5-2 decision at 157 to tie the match at 9-all.
Senior Seth Meyer (Defiance) won by injury default at 165. He was winning 5-3 in the third period when the John Carroll wrestler was injured, giving ONU a 15-9 lead.
Junior Clayton Davidson (Kirtland) pitched a 3-0 shutout at 174 and senior Alex Bair (Centerville) rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to post an 8-4 decision at 184 to make it 21-9.
The Blue Streaks got a pin at 197 to pull within 21-15, but sophomore Nate Barcaskey (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) needed just 2:07 of the first period to post a 16-0 tech fall at heavyweight to clinch the match for Ohio Northern.
The Polar Bears will compete as a JV squad this weekend at the Alma (Mich.) Open and will return to varsity action Jan. 26-27 at the Wheaton (Ill.) Invitational.
