Wrestling posts 3-1 record at Washington & Lee (Va.) Duals

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Ohio Northern wrestling team wrapped up 2017 with a solid performance at the Washington & Lee (Va.) Duals as it posted a 3-1 record on Monday.
The Polar Bears improve to 4-3 overall.
In Northern's first dual of the day, Northern defeated the Coast Guard Academy (Conn.) with a tie-breaker, 19-18.
ONU earned the victory after breaking an 18-all tie by winning the most individual bouts in the matchup.
Sophomore Seth Transue (Plain City/Dublin) got ONU off to a fast start as he won at 125, 8-2.
After falling in its 133 class, Northern saw freshmen Noah Mattin (Archbold) and Schuyler Caprella (Harrod/Allen East) win at 141 and 149.
Senior Seth Meyer (Defiance) would win 3-2 at 165, before junior Clayton Davidson (Kirtland) was victorious in the 174 pound weight class by a 4-0 decision.
Senior Alex Bair (Centerville) wrapped the match up with a 4-0 shutout victory at 197.
In the second round of the day, Northern defeated King's (Pa.) 37-12 to remain unbeaten on the day.
Transue would again start the Polar Bears off with an 11-3 victory in the 125 pound weight class before freshman Derek Dolph (Canton/South) won by forfeit at 133.
Caprella, Meyer, Davidson and Bair all also were victorious in their respective bouts, while senior Gavin Nelson (Oregon/Clay) picked up his first victory of the day with a tech fall 5:42 into the match.
In the fourth round of the afternoon, Northern fell to North Central (Ill.) 19-12.
Transue and Dolph were victorious at 125 and 133, respectively to get Northern on the board early.
After North Central won the next three weight classes, Meyer and Davidson would pick up back-to-back victories at 165 and 174 for the Polar Bears.
In ONU's final dual of the day, the Polar Bears defeated Keystone (Pa.) 45-12.
After falling in the opening 125 pound weight class, Northern would win in the next eight weight classes as Dolph won by a tech fall in 2:18 at 133, sophomore Aidan Pierobon (Rochester Hills, Mich./Stoney Creek) won 11-5 at 141, and Caprella won by fall at 149 in 3:10.
Nelson, Meyer, Davidson, Bair, and Hickey would win the next four weight classes by forfeit to close out the matchup and help ONU seal the victory.
The Polar Bears will return to action Jan. 4-5 as the travel to Fort Wayne (Ind.) to compete in the NWCA National Duals.
