Top-ranked Cody Lovejoy wins by pin to lead Wrestling past #26 Heidelberg 21-12 in the OAC opener

TIFFIN — Top-ranked Cody Lovejoy got a first period pin over third-ranked Nino Majoy in the final bout of the night to lead Ohio Northern to a 21-12 victory at No. 26-ranked Heidelberg Tuesday evening in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener for both teams at Sieberling Gymnasium.
The Polar Bears improve to 13-3 and are 1-0 in the OAC, while the Student Princes fall to 7-10, 0-1.
With ONU clinging to a 15-12 lead entering the final bout of the match, Lovejoy got a quick takedown and two 3-point near falls to build an 8-0 lead.
He turned Majoy again for more near fall points and got the pin at the 2:34 mark of the first period, icing the dual meet victory for the Polar Bears.
Lovejoy, who also has a win over No. 2-ranked Mackenzie Green of Trine (Ind.) earlier this season, improves to 29-0 and now has 20 pins on the season.
Freshman Brad Taton got ONU off to a quick 3-0 lead by winning 3-2 at 125 pounds. He is now 17-10 on the year.
Freshman Evan Morgan tied the match at 6-6 with a 6-1 overtime decision at 149 pounds. He registered a takedown and a 3-point nar fall in the final 10 seconds of overtime to post the victory and improve to 21-10 this season.
Sophomore Gennar Feucht used a first period takedown and riding time advantage to post a 3-2 decision at 157 pounds and give the Polar Bears a 9-6 lead midway through the match. Feucht is now 24-4 in 2014-15.
Junior Colt Lovejoy had three takedowns, a reversal and more than four minutes of riding time to post a 9-3 victory at 165 pounds to extend ONU's lead to 12-6. Lovejoy improves to 22-3 on the season.
Junior Tyler Gargano got a second period takedown and near fall to win 5-3 at 174 pounds to push Northern's advantage to 15-6. Gargano moves to 17-5 on the seson.
The Polar Bears will return to action next Tuesday with a 7:30 pm home match against No. 7-ranked Mount Union at the ONU Sports Center.
