Polar Bears thrive on snowy night as Women's Lacrosse defeats Trine (Ind.) 14-8 to post first 3-0 start in program history

ADA — Freshman Kiersten Schultz (Bethel Park, Pa.) scored four goals and junior Sydney Skelding (North Plainfield, N.J./Dublin) had three goals to lead the Ohio Northern women's lacrosse team to a 14-8 victory over Trine (Ind.) on a snowy evening at Dial-Roberson Stadium.

The Polar Bears improve to 3-0 for the first time in the five-year history of the program, while the Thunder fall to 0-1.

The game was played in heavy snow with gusty winds and the snow-covered field made conditions difficult for both squads.

Trine appeared to handle the adverse conditions the best early on, scoring twice in the first 2:40 of the contest.

But the Polar Bears would take control by scoring the next eight goals until a Thunder goal just six seconds prior to halftime trimmed the lead to 8-3 at intermission.

ONU would then score five of the first six goals in the second half to grab a 13-4 lead with 14:00 to play.

TU would score four straight goals over the next 7:03 to get within 13-8, but Schultz would ice the game with a goal with 3:19 left to play and ONU would run out the clock for the win.

In all, eight different Ohio Northern players would score goals in the game.

Senior Maddie Storr (Clarence, N.Y.), senior Ann McArn (Bay Village/Western Reserve Academy) and sophomore Kaitlin Thomson (Johns Creek, Ga./Chattahoochee) would score two goals each for Ohio Northern.

Trine was led by Chloe Vruno with three goals.

Senior Kelli Hill (Worthington) had seven saves in goal to pick up the win and improve to 3-0 on the year. Her counterpart from TU, Emily Morthhorst, had 18 saves in the loss.

Northern out-shot Trine 42-19 and won the ground ball battle by a 33-13 margin.

The Polar Bears will head to Hilton Head Island, S.C., next week on their annual spring break trip. ONU will face Gwynedd Mercy (Pa.) on Tuesday at 11 am and Muhlenberg (Pa.) on Thursday at 11 am.
