ADA — Ohio Northern junior Jacqui Lohman (Liberty Township/Lakota East) had career-highs of six goals and seven points, but Albion (Mich.) scored the winning goal with 28 seconds left to grab a 15-14 women's lacrosse decision on a stormy Thursday afternoon at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Polar Bears (2-3 overall) also got five goals from sophomore Sydney Skelding (North Plainfield, N.J./Dublin).
The Britons (3-2) got five goals from Abby Sheklow and Chrystelle Lopez.
Ohio Northern had its offense rolling early in the game, racing to an 8-2 lead in the first 15:06 of the contest.
Lohman's goal at the 15:11 mark completed her hat trick and put ONU up 7-2 and junior Ann McArn (Bay Village/Western Reserve Academy) followed with her second goal of the day just 17 seconds later to make it 8-2.
Skelding completed her hat trick at the 13:10 mark of the first half and ONU led 9-3.
But AC answered with seven consecutive goals over the next 8:09 to take a 10-9 lead.
Lohman evened the game at 10-all with 3:31 to go, but the Britons took an 11-10 lead into intermission on a Lopez man-up goal with 49 seconds left in the period.
After a 5-minute lull in scoring to start the second half, Skelding tied the game at 11-11 at the 24:30 mark.
AC pushed its lead to 14-12 with 17:39 to play, but Lohman and Skelding scored 24 second apart to tie the game at 14-14 with 13:10 remaining.
The defenses then took over, as neither team could find the net more than 12 minutes.
ONU took three penalties in a 1:34 span, giving Albion a 3-man up opportunity with 1:32 to play.
Northern killed off the first of the three penalties, but Lopez scored a free position shot for AC with 28 seconds left with the go-ahead goal.
Albion then won the ensuing draw with a man advantage and ran out the clock to hang on for the win.
The game was delayed 35 minutes due to lightning in the area during warmups. The teams played in several heavy rains and fought very high winds throughout the game.
AC out-shot ONU 38-21, won the ground ball battle 24-20 and took 18 of the 31 draw controls.
Ohio Northern junior Kelli Hill (Worthington) had a career-high 16 saves in goal to keep the Polar Bears in the contest. She finished with a .516 save percentage and an impressive eight ground balls.
ONU will take to the road for games at Siena Heights (Mich.) on Saturday, at Cleary (Mich.) on March 21 and at Trine (Ind.) on March 27 before opening OAC play March 30 at home against Mount Union.
