ANDERSON, Ind. — The Ohio Northern women's basketball team opened its 2019-20 season with a 59-49 victory at Anderson (Ind.) on Tuesday evening at Lewis Gymnasium.
The Polar Bears (1-0 overall) were led by senior Abby Weeks (West Chester/Mount Notre Dame) with 11 points and junior Sydney Ward (Columbus/Upper Arlington) added 10 points and six rebounds.
The Ravens (0-1) were led by Payton Moore with 14 points.
Northern led 15-10 after the first period and 27-21 at halftime.
Weeks opened the second half with a 3-pointer to make it 30-21 just 58 seconds in and ONU's would be no less than six points the rest of the way.
Senior Emily Mescher (Maria Stein/Marion Local) scored with 57 seconds left to give Northern its biggest lead of the night at 59-44.
Ohio Northern made 23-of-61 of its field goals for 37.7 percent and was 8-of-19 from 3-point range for 42.1 percent. Anderson was 15-of-49 from the floor for 30.6 percent and was 5-of-22 from 3-point range for 22.7 percent.
ONU out-rebounded AU 47-32.
The Polar Bears will return to action Nov. 22-23 at the Wisconsin Lutheran Invitational.
