Three score in double figures as Women's Basketball gets 62-41 win over Transylvania (Ky.)
ADA — The Polar Bear women's basketball team opened up the 2011 Sodexo Tournament with a 62-41 win over Transylvania (Ky.) at the ONU Sports Center on Friday night.
Ohio Northern improves to 2-0 overall while the Pioneers fall to 0-2 on the season.
Three different players scored in double figures for Northern, with senior Megan Porter and junior Joanna Snyder each notching game-high 13 points. Junior Morgan Dumbaugh tallied 11 points, while senior Kara Dysert pulled down a game-high 11 boards.
For Transylvania, Kayla Dobson put up 11 points, followed by Jariana Gillespie's eight points.
ONU led the entire first half, with its largest lead at 17 points following a jumper by junior Katie Jones. Transylvania would cut into that lead to 10 points (30-20) before the half with a last ditch effort by Emily Ullrich with a good jumper at the buzzer.
Much like the first half, Northern would lead during the entire half, though the Pioneers came within six after a 3-point play by Dobson.
The Polar Bears followed that up with an 18-4 run capped off by a Cenzie Yoder jumper for the 54-34 lead. Northern would continue to coast through the rest of the half to the eventual 21-point win.
"We're looking good so far but it's a long season. We definitely have things we need to tighten up," head coach Michele Durand commented after the game.
Northern closes out the Sodexo Tournament Saturday afternoon, taking on Hanover (Ind.) at 3 p.m. The Panthers enter tomorrow's game 1-0 overall following a 65-46 win over Adrian (Mich.) in day 1 of the tournament.
