ANGOLA, Ind. — No. 3 Trine (Ind.) swept a doubleheader with the Ohio Northern softball team on Sunday at SportONE/Parkview Field.
The Thunder (12-2 overall) won the first game 8-1 and secured the sweep with a 13-6 victory in the second game, dropping the Polar Bears to 6-6 overall.
The games were originally scheduled for Saturday in Ada but were moved due to the rain from earlier in the week.
In Game 1, the Polar Bears' lone run came courtesy of a solo homer from sophomore Taylor Hilty (Kettering/Fairmont) in the top of the third inning that tied the score at 1-1.
Karley Trine led the Thunder with two home runs and five RBIs in the game.
The TU pitching duo of Alexis Michon and Debbie Hill allowed just one run on four hits and no walks and combined for 11 strikeouts.
In Game 2, TU built a 13-0 lead through four innings highlighted by a grand slam from Amanda Prather in the bottom of the first.
Hilty broke up a no-hitter by Trine pitcher Anna Koeppl with a single in the top of the fifth inning after sophomore Ashley Lenser (Brookville) led off the frame by reaching base on an error.
Following a Trine pitching change, ONU got on the scoreboard via an RBI double from freshman Allie Wilson (Wapakoneta).
Hilty then scored on a passed ball, and fifth-year senior Abby Elliott (Loveland/Ursuline) added an RBI single.
After a single from senior Sydney Motylinski (Ida, Mich.), a one-out, 2-RBI double from sophomore Callie Rosser (Republic/Monroeville) and a two-out RBI single from junior Kaylie Griffin (Grafton/Elyria Catholic) cut the ONU deficit to seven, 13-6, to cap the scoring.
The Polar Bears return to action on Wednesday when they host a doubleheader with Alma (Mich.) beginning at 3 p.m.
