ADA —The Ohio Northern softball team scored 16 runs and pounded out 23 base hits in a 6-4, 10-0 double header sweep of Heidelberg on Sunday morning at the ONU Softball Field.
The Polar Bears improve to 11-10-1 overall and are 10-9 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Student Princes fall to 10-12-1, 9-11.
ONU salvaged a split of the 4-game series after HU won both games in Tiffin on Saturday 4-3 and 6-4.
Junior Rachel Hish (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) went 4-for-6 with a triple and three runs scored to lead the ONU offense.
In the opener, senior Abby Davis (New Palestine, Ind.) and sophomore Annika Murray (Hilliard/Bradley) had back-to-back RBI infield singles in the fifth as ONU rallied from a 4-3 deficit to lead 5-4.
Senior Gabby Stewart (Union, Ky./St. Henry) singled home to score junior Hannah Rubel (Swanton/Notre Dame) with an insurance run in the sixth.
In the nightcap, freshman Alex Daum (Wapakoneta) threw a 2-hit shutout, striking out one, in five innings as the game was called due to the NCAA's 8-run rule.
Stewart, junior Abby Elliott (Loveland/Ursuline) and Murray all had three hits on the day.
The Polar Bears will return to action next weekend with a 4-game series with Wilmington. ONU will host the Quakers for two games on Saturday and will play twice at Wilmington on Sunday.
