ADA — The Ohio Northern softball team picked up a 3-1 victory in game one before falling 8-1 in the nightcap and clinched the No. 3 seed in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day in the 2018 home regular season finale on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears move to 27-7 overall, and finishes in second place in the OAC with a 13-5 record, while the Muskies move to 24-10, 10-8.
Heidelberg swept Wilmington in a twinbill earlier on Saturday and moved its conference record to 13-5. Due to tie breaker rules, Heidelberg will own the No. 2 seed in next weekend's OAC Tournament.
The Polar Bears honored seniors Jenna Hollar (Lima/Bath), Leanna Henry (West Jefferson), Miranda Huddle (Versailles), and Kirsten Lightel (Tallmadge) prior to the contest during its Senior Day festivities.
After Hollar got on base following a MU miscue in game one, a stolen base and single from junior Hailee Loughman (Brookville) plated Hollar to give ONU an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.
Muskingum answered with a run in the bottom of the first inning before a single from Hollar in the bottom of the fourth inning plated junior Laura Burden (Pleasant Hill/Newton) and a hit from sophomore Alicia Swierz (Deerfield/Southeast) scored Hollar to give ONU a 3-1 lead.
The Muskingum offense would threaten late in the contest, but the ONU defense held strong to seal the 3-1 game one victory.
Lightel picked up the victory in the pitchers circle, improving to 15-2 on the year after striking out five batters.
Muskingum opened game two with five runs through the first two innings before ONU was able to tally a run in the bottom of second inning to cut the gap to 5-1.
In that inning, Loughman scored following a single from Burden.
Muskingum scored three more insurance runs as it went on to win game two 8-1.
The Polar Bears return to action on Monday afternoon with a non-conference twinbill at Transylvania (Ky.) at 4:30 p.m.
