WOOSTER — The Ohio Northern softball team swept Wooster 5-0, 5-0 and moved its winning streak to five straight games on Wednesday afternoon at Galpin Park.
The Polar Bears improve to 15-3 overall, while the Scots drop to 7-11.
Senior Kirsten Lightel (Tallmadge) and junior Kaitlin Surdej (Lancaster/Central) each pitched complete game victories for ONU in the pitchers circle.
Lightel moves to 8-1 on the season, while Surdej is now 7-2.
Senior Jenna Hollar (Lima/Bath) was a combined 4-for-8 in the two contests and added two runs and a stolen base.
Sophomore Alicia Swierz (Deerfield/Southeast) was 3-for-4 from the plate and added two runs and two RBI for ONU.
In the first contest, ONU used a 4-run second inning to take control of the contest. Senior Hailee Loughman (Brookville), and sophomores Brady Guest (Convoy/Crestview), Mallory Taylor (Olmsted Falls) and Jordan Cloonan (Kirtland/Cornerstone Christian) all scored in the inning.
Sophomore Gabby Stewart (Union, Ky./St. Henry) would drive Swierz home in the top of the fifth inning to help ONU seal the victory.
After three scoreless innings to begin game two, Northern broke the game open with a single from Guest in the top of the fourth inning to score Hollar.
In the top of the fifth inning an RBI double from Swierz scored sophomore Lexie Hess (Mount Vernon) before Swierz scored on a groundout later in the inning.
An RBI double from Stewart in the top of the seventh inning would put the exclamation on the two victories as ONU went on to win game two, 5-0.
The Polar Bears return home on Friday afternoon as they welcome Capital to the ONU Softball Field for a double header with the first pitch of game one set to be at 1 p.m.
