CLERMONT, Fla. — Sophomore Kaitlin Surdej (Lancaster/Central) threw a no-hitter and junior Kirsten Lightel (Tallmadge) tossed a shutout to lead the Ohio Northern softball team to a pair of season-opening victories Sunday morning at the PFX Spring Games.
The Polar Bears (2-0) began the season with a no-hitter from Surdej in a 9-0 win over Mitchell (Conn.).
Lightel then posted a 6-hit shutout as ONU defeated Penn Satte-Behrend 3-0.
Sophomore Hailee Laughman (Brookville) went 4-for-5 with 4 RBI in the two games to lead the Ohio Northern offense.
In the opening game against Mitchell, Surdej allowed a leadoff walk and then retired the next 15 batters to post her first career no-hitter.
She struck out nine batters and did not allow a ball to be hit out of the infield in the game.
In her first outing as a freshman last season, Surdej tossed a 1-hit shutout over Houghton (N.Y.)
Northern broke the game open with a 4-run second and a 4-run fourth. The game was called after five innings due to the NCAA's 8-run rule.
Against PSUB, Laughman had RBI doubled in the fourth and sixth innings after ONU had scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first.
Lightel scattered six hits and struck out two in the shutout.
The Polar Bears will return to action with two games on Monday, playing Lebanon Valley (Pa.) at 1 pm and Wittenberg at 6 pm in Clermont.
