ADA — Sophomore Jenna Hollar moves into fifth all-time in stolen bases as the Polar Bears split 8-7, 5-8 Friday afternoon at the ONU Softball Field.
Northern moves to 15-13 overall, 5-5 Ohio Athletic Conference, while Mount Union moves to 19-13, 5-5.
Hollar recorded two stolen bases on the day, moving her career total to 47 stolen bases.
Freshman Kylie Asmus led ONU at the dish going 5-for-8 with two runs and an RBI.
In the circle, freshman Kaitlin Surdej pitched two complete games, striking out eight.
In game one, Northern took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning as senior Amanda Lahti doubled to center field scoring both Asmus and Hollar.
Later in the inning, freshman Hailee Loughman hit a 2 RBI single to left center putting ONU on top 4-0.
Mount Union would get one run back in the next half inning as Logan Lehman homered to deep center field.
The Polar Bears would add two more runs in the bottom of the second inning as a pair of Mount Union miscues would place runners in scoring position.
Leading 6-1, Hollar picked up her first RBI of the day as she singled to shortstop scoring freshman Mackenzie Sowers.
Northern would add another run in the fifth inning as Asmus doubled down the left field line scoring junior Megan Hupp.
Mount Union would rally late as they plated two runs in the sixth inning and three in the seventh before Surdej was able to retire the side.
Mount Union used a strong first inning in game two claim the 8-5 victory.
The Polar Bears found themselves trailing 5-0 early before plating its first run in the bottom of the third inning.
The Purple Raiders would tack on two insurance runs in the top of the fifth inning increasing its lead to 7-1.
Northern would match them in the bottom half of the inning as Hupp doubled to left field scoring junior Anna Martin.
Hupp would later score on an error by the Mount Union shortstop.
Trailing 8-3 in the bottom of the seventh, ONU was able to score two more runs as Lahti hit a 2 RBI double to left field that scored both Hupp and Asmus.
Mount Union would retire the next batter to claim the win.
Northern returns to action Saturday as they play host to Muskingum, first pitch scheduled for 1 pm.
